This is part of an occasional series by the Sanpete Country Travel and Utah Heritage Highway 89 Alliance on the people and places along U.S. Highway 89.

Sanpete County to Celebrate Pioneer Day.

Sanpete County is gearing up for numerous Pioneer Day celebrations being held in the cities and towns along Utah’s Heritage Highway.

The festivities begin in Fairview July 16 with a co-ed softball tournament. On July 21, there will be an “ice breaker” party at 7 p.m. in the city park, including kids games, pie-eating contests, and a youth dance at 8:30 p.m. On Friday, July 22, an old-fashioned kids rodeo will be held in the local arena at 7 p.m., including barrel racing and clown acts. Saturday, July 23 highlights include a 7 p.m. concert in the city park and an 8 p.m. rodeo. Sunday, July 24 there will be a patriotic service at 7 p.m. in The Red Church. Monday, July 25, the day begins with a fun run at 6:30 a.m., followed by a flag ceremony, kids programs and a children’s parade at 10:30 a.m., and an 11 a.m. grand parade followed by lunch in the park. At 7 p.m. the 21st annual Demolition Derby will be held, followed by fireworks at 10 p.m.

In Spring City, Pioneer Day events begin on July 22 with an 8 p.m. street dance to the music of Fire Hawk. On Saturday, July 23, the day begins with a 6:30 a.m. fireman’s wake-up call and breakfast from 7 to 9:30 a.m. There will be a 10 a.m. parade, an 11 a.m. car show and bake sale, and other events in the city park. At noon, the city will hold its famous barbecue turkey lunch in the city park, followed by youth city council games at 1 p.m. Awards for the car show will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday, an old-time gospel revival will be held in the city park bowery at 7 p.m.

In Centerfield, a community dinner will be held July 22 at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 23, there will be a 7 a.m. breakfast in the city park, followed by a 10 a.m. parade and day-long activities in the park.
